The Sunday Mirror, a newspaper with a readership of millions of people, recently ranked Dickenson Bay in Antigua as the number one Caribbean beach, with Carlisle Bay in Barbados, along with Negril in Jamaica, Reduit in St. Lucia and Playa Dorada in the Dominican Republic, as the top five beaches in the region.

In its beach report, the publication, in describing Carlisle Bay as a “laid-back family” location, said; “The beach is shallow and safe for kids. Beach vendors are strictly controlled and set up stalls in front of the Boat Yard bar leaving sunbathers in peace.”

To help make its choices, the paper said it called in experts from the University of Glamorgan who believe that they have come up with a formula for what makes a good beach.

According to the Sunday Mirror, researchers from the university asked 1 000 Britons what they wanted from a seaside holiday and produced a checklist saying that the perfect beach should be safe, have dramatic scenery, no huge tides, no litter and clear, sparkling water. “Then we added in a few demands of our own. A holiday beach should have family-friendly beach bars, lots of shade and safe watersports,” the paper said.
